A Guide to Cold Drawn Special-shaped Tubes
News Details

Modern machinery requires strong, precise, custom-shaped steel pipes. Farmers, auto builders, and factory engineers need strong parts that fit exact spaces and carry heavy loads. Standard round pipes often cannot meet these complex design requirements.
To solve this problem, manufacturers use special-shaped steel pipes. These pipes come in many shapes, such as square, oval, star, and triangular.
At FAKESI (Wuxi Jiangbo), we specialize in cold-drawn seamless steel pipes. We use room-temperature cold drawing to turn raw steel pipes into high-precision profile pipes. In this guide, we break down our complete manufacturing process and show how our products help global industries build better machinery.
Step 1: Material Selection and Surface Pretreatment
Every high-quality pipe starts with excellent raw materials. We select high-quality seamless round pipes and carbon steel pipes as our billets. Before reshaping the steel, we must clean and protect its surface through three key chemical steps:
-
Pickling: We soak raw steel pipes in an acid bath. This removes rust, scale, and impurities from the inner and outer pipe walls.
-
Phosphating: Next, we apply a phosphate layer to the clean metal surface. This layer creates a strong foundation that firmly holds the lubricant in place.
-
Saponification Lubrication: Finally, we coat the steel with a special soap-based lubricant. This smooth layer reduces friction during the drawing process, protects our steel dies from premature wear, and leaves a smooth surface on the finished pipe.
Proper surface treatment ensures that the metal slides smoothly through the dies without scratching or tearing.
Step 2: Cold Drawing and Steel Reshaping
After pretreatment, we move the pipe billets to our heavy-duty cold drawing machines. Unlike hot rolling, which heats steel to extreme temperatures, cold drawing reshapes metal at room temperature.
-
Custom Dies: We design and build custom hardened dies for each unique cross-sectional shape.
-
Powerful Pulling Force: The cold drawing machine pulls the pretreated round pipe through the custom die with great force.
-
Precision Compression: As the steel passes through the die, the tool compresses the round pipe into a non-circular shape.
This cold drawing process allows us to control wall thickness, tight tolerances, and profile accuracy without melting or heating the metal.
Step 3: Heat Treatment and Stress Relief
Cold drawing changes the internal structure of the steel. As the machine compresses and shapes the metal, the pipe becomes harder and stiffer. Engineers call this effect "work hardening." While the pipe becomes stronger, it also loses flexibility and can crack under sudden impact.
To remedy this, we subject all cold-drawn pipes to a controlled heat treatment process called stress relief annealing:
-
Heating the Steel: We place the cold-drawn pipes in industrial furnaces and heat them to precise temperatures.
-
Removing Internal Stress: The heat relaxes the internal structure of the steel and relieves residual stress caused by heavy drawing.
-
Restoring Toughness: Annealing restores the ductility and toughness of the metal. This step ensures that the final special-shaped pipe can withstand heavy torsional forces, high pressure, and mechanical shock without breaking.
Step 4: Finishing, Straightening, and Quality Inspection
Once the pipes have cooled after heat treatment, they enter our final finishing and inspection department. We follow a strict quality control workflow to ensure that every pipe meets international standards:
-
Precision Straightening: High-power machines straighten every profile pipe to ensure perfect alignment for easy installation.
-
Cutting and Deburring: Automatic saws cut the long pipes to the exact lengths required by the customer. Workers then clean all sharp edges and burrs from the pipe ends.
-
Dimensional Inspection: Quality inspectors use calibrated gauges to measure outer dimensions, wall thickness, corner radii, and profile angles.
-
Non-Destructive Testing (NDT): We use ultrasonic testing and eddy current inspection to detect invisible internal cracks or hidden defects in the pipe walls.
Only pipes that pass all tests are finally approved and sent to our warehouse for packaging and global shipping.
Key Applications of FAKESI Special-Shaped Pipes
Thanks to our custom die technology and stringent quality control, FAKESI supplies custom profile pipes to customers around the world:
-
Agricultural Power Take-Off (PTO) Shafts: We manufacture high-torque PTO Lemon Pipes, 10ST Star Profile Pipes, and Triangular Pipes. Farmers and agricultural machinery manufacturers install these pipes in tractor power take-off (PTO) shafts to transfer strong engine power smoothly across fields.
-
Automotive and Transportation: We supply custom oval, square, and D-shaped seamless pipes for vehicle transmission shafts, steering systems, and motorcycle structural frames.
-
Industrial and Hydraulic Equipment: Our rectangular and custom profile pipes are used as outer cylinders for hydraulic systems, smart lock housings, and motor frames.
